The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has recently made a significant announcement, selecting two distinguished female referees from Vietnam for a prestigious role.
Referee Le Thi Ly, based in Ho Chi Minh City, and assistant referee Ha Thi Phuong, from Hai Phong, have been chosen to officiate at the upcoming AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup. This event is set to take place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from February 28 to March 17, 2024, marking a crucial moment in their careers and in the promotion of gender equality in sports officiating.
Both referees have been recognized for their exceptional skills and integrity in the field of football refereeing. Their journey to this momentous appointment began earlier, with their participation in a high-profile match between the North Korean women’s national team and the Japanese women’s national team on February 24, 2024, in Pyongyang, North Korea. This match, officiated by Le Thi Ly as the main referee and Ha Thi Phuong as the assistant, was under the auspices of FIFA, showcasing their capabilities on an international stage.
Le Thi Ly, in particular, holds a distinguished position among referees in Vietnam. As one of the three Vietnamese referees recognized by FIFA, her expertise and dedication have led her to become a senior referee with the AFC. She is regularly entrusted with the responsibility of officiating in significant tournaments and official matches, exemplifying her professionalism and commitment to the sport. This recent appointment by the AFC not only highlights her accomplishments but also sets a precedent for the involvement of female referees in high-level football tournaments, furthering the progress towards gender equality in sports officiating.
