VPF summarizes the operation of VAR in the first half of the 2023/2024 season

On the morning of March 29, the Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF) and the Referee Committee of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) held a VAR operational training session. This session was to review and draw lessons from the use of VAR during the first phase of the 2023/24 Night Wolf National Championship.

Attending the program were Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan, President of VFF, Mr. Nguyen Minh Ngoc, CEO of VPF and Head of the Organizing Committee for the National Professional Football Championships 2023/24, Mr. Dang Thanh Hạ, Head of the VFF Referee Committee, along with members of the Referee Committee, VAR referees, and Replay Operators (ROs) who are serving at the tournament.

The session discussed coordination among the VAR referee team, on-field referees, and technicians; and cooperation with the broadcast team. It aimed at improving the coordination among various units in the next phase of the season, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of VAR in organizing the tournament.

Besides VAR operational issues, the Referee Committee prepared data on situations that occurred in the Night Wolf V.League 1-2023/24 matches for professional analysis. This allowed VAR referees and technical teams to gain more experience and lessons in handling situations during their duties.

Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan, President of VFF, in his speech, emphasized the crucial role of VAR in making the league fairer and supporting referees in managing matches, thus improving the quality of the competition. However, he stressed the need for the Referee Committee, VAR referees, and technicians to engage in active discussions and unify procedures for optimal operation. He highlighted the importance of quick and accurate decision-making and urged the Referee Committee to ensure the quality and quantity of personnel for VAR operation in all matches once the necessary infrastructure is available.

Mr. Đặng Thanh Hạ, Head of the VFF Referee Committee, highlighted the danger of referees becoming overly reliant on VAR, reminding them that VAR is a support tool and not a decisive factor in match officiating.

The VAR operational training and review session is a regular activity by the Referee Committee and VPF to continually enhance the skills and experience of the operational team, contributing to the overall success of the tournament.
