Coach Peter Cklamovski: “We don’t care about the noise – Malaysia Is ready to change history”

Kuala Lumpur, 9 June, 2025 – Ahead of the highly anticipated clash between Malaysia and Vietnam in the second round of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, head coach Peter Cklamovski made it clear that his focus is fully on football, not the external chatter surrounding Malaysia’s naturalized players.

“We’re preparing for a very important match against Vietnam. Our entire team must give their all to make Malaysians proud,” Cklamovski said during a press conference on June 9. “I know Vietnam is strong, their players are skilled, and it’s been ten years since Malaysia last beat them—but that’s our motivation. We are doing everything to win.”

Vietnam currently tops Group F after a 5-0 win over Laos, leading on goal difference with 3 points and a +5 goal difference. Malaysia follows with 3 points as well, having beaten Nepal 2-0. A draw would be enough for Vietnam to retain the top spot, while Malaysia must win to take the lead.

Vietnam has maintained an 11-year unbeaten streak against Malaysia, recording 6 wins and 1 draw, scoring 15 goals and conceding only 3. While Vietnam claimed the AFF Cup title in 2024, Malaysia has been in a transitional period since 2019, marked by group-stage exits at the 2020 and 2022 editions of the AFF Cup and a recent squad overhaul under Coach Cklamovski.

“We know we’ve been underestimated, but just wait—we will change history,” the Australian coach asserted.

Cklamovski highlighted the team’s physical and tactical preparation. “The Malaysian players wrapped up their league season in April, so they are physically fresh. Their fitness has clearly improved. We’re building a high-performance team, and physical strength is a key factor,” he explained. “The friendly against Cape Verde was a valuable test, and I believe Malaysia will deliver a strong performance.”

To boost their chances in the qualifiers, Malaysia has introduced several naturalized players. The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) recently announced five new call-ups: Imanol Machuca, Rodrigo Holgado, Facundo Garces (all of Argentine descent), Jon Irazabal (Spanish roots), and Joao Figueiredo (Brazilian descent). These players have been added to Malaysia’s roster for the crucial match against Vietnam, scheduled for 8:00 PM on June 10 at Bukit Jalil Stadium.

When asked about criticism regarding the influx of naturalized players, Cklamovski responded firmly: “I’m aware of what people say about the naturalized players, but we don’t let that distract us. These players are proud to wear the Malaysian jersey. They are here to contribute, and they’ve been welcomed with open arms.”

“People can talk all they want, but we’re focused on training and preparation. Malaysia will showcase unity on the pitch,” he added.

The former J-League assistant concluded: “The coaching staff is focused on building a strong team mentality. Each player has been given a clear role, and we’re encouraging them to execute it. Malaysia is hungry to improve and grow every single day. The players are committed to the philosophy, and we are progressing match by match.”
