U23 Vietnam goalkeeper aims for victory as the team set to face Laos in ASEAN U23 championship opener

Indonesia, 19 July, 2025 – Vietnam U23 completed their final training session on the evening of July 18 ahead of their opening match against Laos U23 at the 2025 ASEAN U23 Championship, set to take place at GBK Madya Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia.

To preserve the players’ energy and minimize injury risks, head coach Kim Sang Sik opted to reduce the training intensity while focusing on finalizing tactical plans, personnel adjustments, and lineup details for the Group B clash.

Speaking to the media ahead of the match, goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien expressed the team’s determination: “The whole team and I are fully focused and ready for tomorrow’s match. We are approaching the game with the highest level of determination and best spirit. We treat every opponent equally, and once we step on the field, we will give it our all to achieve the best result.”

Addressing the competition among goalkeepers, Trung Kien added: “There’s not much difference between the three goalkeepers. Personally, I always try to perform my best in each training session. I’ve also learned a lot from our goalkeeper coach Lee Won Jae, who has participated in four World Cups. Every session is an opportunity for me to improve.”

Vietnam U23 will kick off their Group B campaign against Laos U23 at 17:00 local time today (July 19) at Patriot Stadium, Indonesia. The match will be livestreamed on the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) Online Newspaper.

Vietnam enter the tournament as the two-time defending champions, having lifted the trophy in 2022 and 2023. Coach Kim Sang Sik and his players are determined to defend the title and use the competition as preparation for the AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifiers and SEA Games 33 later this year.
