Ha Noi, 5 August, 2025 – Ahead of the National Super Cup 2024/2025, Nam Dinh head coach Vu Hong Viet confirmed that star striker Nguyen Xuan Son will not be registered for the first phase of the upcoming V.League 1 season due to injury.
“Xuan Son is currently in his home country, Brazil, training to recover from his injury. He will not be available for the first phase of V.League 1 – 2025/2026, but I hope he can return in the second phase,” coach Vu Hong Viet stated during the press conference.
The Vietnamese international suffered a serious leg injury during the second leg of the ASEAN Cup 2024 final against Thailand. After a committed performance, he was forced off the pitch early with a fractured tibia and fibula, requiring special treatment and a long recovery period.
Despite the setback, Nam Dinh had earlier announced that they had reached an agreement on a long-term contract extension with the 25-year-old forward. Nguyen Xuan Son has committed his future to the club until 2031, which will see him stay at Thien Truong Stadium through the prime years of his career.
The absence of Xuan Son is a significant blow for Nam Dinh as they prepare for a demanding season, competing in five different tournaments, including the National Super Cup, V.League 1, National Cup, AFC Champions League Two, and ASEAN Club Championship. However, with a reinforced squad and other new signings, the reigning V.League champions aim to maintain their dominance both domestically and regionally.
