Ho Chi Minh City I begin title defense with strong opening round victory

Hanoi, 5 September, 2025 – The opening round of the Vietnam Women’s National Championship – Thai Son Bac Cup 2025 concluded with a dominant performance from defending champions Ho Chi Minh City I, who thrashed their younger counterparts Ho Chi Minh City II 7-0 to claim the top spot on the standings.

Head coach Doan Thi Kim Chi fielded a strong lineup featuring experienced players such as goalkeeper Thu Em, center-back Chuong Thi Kieu, and midfielder Phan Thi Trang. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City II entered the match with determination, defending compactly and launching occasional counterattacks that caused early difficulties for their senior team.

Despite applying constant pressure, the champions had to wait until the 27th minute to break the deadlock. Following a chaotic sequence in the penalty area, K’Thua’s initial shot was denied by goalkeeper Cam Thu, but Hong Nhung reacted quickly to slot home the rebound and open the scoring.

That goal unlocked the game for Ho Chi Minh City I, who began attacking with greater confidence. In the 42nd minute, Kim Yen unleashed a stunning long-range strike to double the lead. Just moments later, Thu Thao pounced on a loose ball in the box to make it 3-0. Before halftime, Cu Thi Huynh Nhu added a fourth, giving the champions a commanding 4-0 advantage at the break.

The second half continued in the same one-sided fashion. Three minutes after the restart, Bao Chau curled a precise finish into the net to extend the lead to 5-0. In the 73rd minute, Hong Nhung’s header deflected off Thanh Ngan of Ho Chi Minh City II and wrong-footed the goalkeeper, registering the sixth goal. The rout was completed in the 86th minute when K’Thua finally got on the scoresheet with a composed finish, sealing the emphatic 7-0 victory.

The result puts Ho Chi Minh City I temporarily at the top of the table, level on points with Hanoi but ahead on goal difference. More importantly, it underlines the gap in quality between the reigning champions, who have dominated domestic women’s football for years, and their younger “sister team.”

The commanding win also sends a strong message to the rest of the league: Ho Chi Minh City I remain the frontrunners to defend their crown. Under coach Doan Thi Kim Chi, the team continues to display both individual brilliance and collective strength, cementing their status as the most formidable force in Vietnamese women’s football.
