Vinh, 4 October 2025 – Coach Van Sy Son has reached an agreement to take charge of his hometown club Song Lam Nghe An after Round 6 of the 2025-2026 V.League 1 season. This marks a meaningful homecoming for Son, who spent nearly his entire playing career at Vinh Stadium.
During the V.League 1 break, as the Vietnam national team competes in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, Coach Van Sy Son will officially begin his new role with Song Lam Nghe An. His appointment came as a surprise to many, as reports had earlier suggested that Coach Nguyen Thanh Cong was the leading candidate for the position. However, negotiations between the two sides fell through, paving the way for former national player Van Sy Son to return home and lead the Nghe An-based club.
Born in 1972 in Nghe An, Van Sy Son comes from one of Vietnam’s most well-known football families. His father, Van Sy Chi, was a legendary player, while his brothers—Van Sy Hung, Van Sy Ngoc, Van Sy Thuy, and Van Sy Linh—all followed in his footsteps into football. As a player, Son spent almost his entire career with Song Lam Nghe An, where he won two V.League 1 titles, one National Cup, and three National Super Cups.
In 2007, Van Sy Son moved to play for Hanoi T&T (the predecessor of Hanoi FC) before transitioning into coaching. He served as an assistant coach at Hanoi FC and later became head coach of Binh Phuoc and most recently, Quang Nam. Under his guidance, Quang Nam became a competitive and resilient team despite not having many star players. In 2023, he led Quang Nam to the V.League 2 championship, earning promotion to V.League 1, and successfully helped them avoid relegation in the 2024-2025 season. However, due to financial difficulties, the club was dissolved ahead of the new season.
Taking over Song Lam Nghe An at this stage presents a major challenge for Coach Van Sy Son. After six rounds, the club sits in 10th place with five points, only two points clear of Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s playoff position but having played one more match. Song Lam Nghe An has also become the third club this season to change head coaches, following Hanoi FC and Becamex Ho Chi Minh FC.
Nevertheless, the return of Coach Van Sy Son—known for his strong personality and passionate approach—is expected to reignite the fighting spirit and traditional identity that once defined Song Lam Nghe An’s proud footballing legacy.
