Vietnam sets target of 110 gold medals at the 33rd SEA Games

Hanoi, 28 November 2025  – Vietnam’s General Department of Physical Education and Sports has officially announced the formation of the national sports delegation for the upcoming SEA Games 33, set to take place in Thailand this December.

According to the decision signed by Director Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet on November 28, Vietnam will send a total of 1,165 members to the regional multi-sport event. Deputy Director Nguyen Hong Minh has been appointed as the head of the delegation.

Out of the 1,165 members, 952 will be funded by the State, including international and domestic round-trip airfare, overweight baggage fees, accommodation, meals, allowances, communication expenses, visa and passport fees, ground transportation, and venue rentals for training and competition. The remaining 213 members will participate using local budgets or socialized funding sources. Competing in 47 sports and disciplines, Vietnam aims to secure 90 to 110 gold medals, targeting a top position in the overall standings. At the previous two SEA Games editions in 2022 and 2023, Vietnam finished first in the medal tally. Key athletes expected to lead the team in Thailand include runner Nguyen Thi Oanh, swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang, and shooter Pham Quang Huy.

Prior to the announcement, Director Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet oversaw a comprehensive evaluation of the national teams’ preparation progress, as well as the living, training, and competition conditions awaiting the delegation in Thailand—where Vietnam is scheduled to arrive beginning December 7. The travel plan, including airport reception and transportation between venues, has also been reviewed thoroughly. The General Department emphasized strict, transparent, and efficient management of all funding sources, both from the State budget and private contributors, as a key requirement in sports administration.

SEA Games 33 is considered a major event where the Vietnamese delegation carries the hopes of millions of fans. Beyond the medal goals, the General Department stressed that performance at the SEA Games must align with Vietnam’s long-term sports development strategy, focusing on improving competitiveness at ASIAD and the Olympic Games. According to the schedule, the first Vietnamese teams will depart for Thailand on December 1, with the final members set to return by December 21. SEA Games 33 will officially open on December 9 and conclude on December 20.
