Vietnamese pencak silat fighter required medical assistance after being hit by an illegal blow at SEA Games 33

Bangkok, 16 December 2025 – Vietnamese pencak silat fighter Nguyen Minh Triet was struck hard during his bout, showed signs of losing consciousness on the mat, and required immediate medical assistance.

The Vietnam pencak silat team continued competing in various weight categories on December 16. Attention was focused on the men’s 65 kg semifinal between Nguyen Minh Triet and Marzuki Muhammad Izzul Irfan of Malaysia. During an attacking exchange, the Malaysian fighter landed a strike to Minh Triet’s neck, causing the Vietnamese athlete to collapse onto the mat in pain.

Fortunately, the medical team reacted promptly and entered the mat when Minh Triet showed signs of unconsciousness. After receiving on-site medical treatment, Minh Triet regained consciousness and was confirmed to be in stable condition. He eventually lost the semifinal 22–35 and therefore could not advance to the final.

This was a disappointing outcome for the Vietnam pencak silat team, as Nguyen Minh Triet was considered one of the athletes with the highest medal expectations at SEA Games 33–2025.

On the December 16 competition day, Vietnam had fighters competing in nine semifinal bouts: Vu Van Kien (men’s 60 kg), Nguyen Minh Triet (men’s 65 kg), Bui Dinh Quyet (men’s 70 kg), Nguyen Duy Tuyen (men’s 90 kg), Duong Thi Hai Quyen (women’s 55 kg), Nguyen Duc Hau (men’s 45 kg), Vu Duc Hung (men’s 75 kg), Nguyen Tan Sang (men’s 80 kg), and Le Thi Van Anh (women’s 60 kg).

Vietnam is represented by a total of 12 pencak silat fighters at SEA Games 33–2025.
