Heartbreak on penalties, U19 Song Lam Nghe An crowned national U19 Modern Cup 2025/2026

Hung Yen, 27 January 2026 – This afternoon at the PVF Youth Football Training Center Stadium, the final of the National U19 Championship Modern Cup 2025/2026 between hosts PVF-CAND and Song Lam Nghe An took place in a tense and dramatic atmosphere, ultimately decided by an emotional penalty shootout. After 90 minutes ended goalless, Song Lam Nghe An held their nerve to defeat PVF-CAND 4-3 on penalties and officially lift the championship trophy.

Going into the final, PVF-CAND were considered favorites thanks to their home advantage and their possession-based playing style developed throughout the tournament. From the first half, the hosts controlled the tempo, dominated possession, and created sustained pressure toward SLNA’s goal.

However, on a day when SLNA’s defense showed discipline and concentration, PVF-CAND’s attacking efforts failed to produce the desired breakthrough. Goalkeeper Bao Ngoc was the standout performer for the Nghe An side, making a series of crucial saves to keep his team in the game. The first half ended 0-0, accurately reflecting the balance between attacking ambition and defensive solidity.

The second half followed a similar pattern. PVF-CAND continued to push forward and control the ball, while SLNA remained patient, opting for a counter-attacking approach and prioritizing defensive organization. Despite their efforts, the hosts could not find a way through a compact SLNA back line, and the match finished scoreless after 90 minutes.

The final was therefore decided by a penalty shootout filled with pressure and drama. SLNA began poorly when Hoang Minh Hoi missed the opening kick. The turning point came in the second round, as goalkeeper Bao Ngoc produced a brilliant save against Minh Nhat, bringing momentum back to SLNA.

Tension peaked in the third round when Hoang Trong Duy Khang slipped and sent his effort over the crossbar. Moments later, Tan Minh calmly converted his penalty, giving SLNA a psychological edge. From there, the Nghe An players showed remarkable composure, converting all remaining kicks, while PVF-CAND were unable to recover and eventually lost 3-4 in the shootout.

This victory confirmed Song Lam Nghe An as champions of the National U19 Championship Modern Cup 2025/2026, marking the end of a tournament defined by resilience, discipline, and strong mentality.

In the awards ceremony, U19 SLNA dominated several individual honors. Goalkeeper Nguyen Bao Ngoc was named Best Goalkeeper, Hoang Minh Hoi won the Top Scorer award, while the title of Best Player of the Tournament went to PVF-CAND striker Hoang Trong Duy Khang.
