China, 9 April 2026 – Vietnam’s top badminton player, Nguyen Thuy Linh, was eliminated in the second round of the women’s singles event at the 2026 Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, China.
On April 9, Nguyen Thuy Linh (world No. 26) faced world No. 1 An Se Young of South Korea in the second round and was unable to cause an upset, losing 0-2 overall.
With her proven class, highlighted by an impressive list of achievements and her position at the top of the world rankings, An Se Young remains a formidable opponent for any player. In their previous three meetings, Nguyen Thuy Linh had already lost to the Korean star, and this encounter was no different. Despite her determined effort, Vietnam’s No. 1 player could not turn the tide.
An Se Young’s versatile and highly technical shot-making forced Nguyen Thuy Linh into a defensive position, leading to a series of unforced errors. The Korean player dominated the first game and secured a convincing 21-7 victory.
Although Nguyen Thuy Linh tried to respond, she was unable to change the momentum as An Se Young maintained consistent pressure with every rally, forcing more mistakes. With another identical score of 21-7 in the second game, the world No. 1 sealed a straight-sets win to advance to the quarterfinals.
Unable to spring a surprise, Nguyen Thuy Linh exited the tournament in the round of 16. Her top-16 finish earned her a prize of 1,650 USD (approximately 45 million VND) along with 4,800 ranking points. Other members of Vietnam’s badminton team had also been eliminated earlier in the competition.
