Vietnam claims first gold medal at the Asian Beach Games 2026

Hainan, 24 April 2026 – Vietnam secured its first medals at the Asian Beach Games 2026 on the morning of April 24, claiming one gold medal and one silver medal to mark a strong turnaround after a slow start.

The multi-sport event, currently taking place on Hainan Island in China, entered its second day of competition with Vietnam looking to bounce back following an unproductive opening day. The response from Vietnamese athletes was immediate and impressive, as they delivered back-to-back podium finishes across different disciplines.

In athletics, young long jumper Ha Thi Thuy Hang produced a remarkable performance to win the gold medal with a leap of 6.16 meters. The 2006-born athlete faced significant pressure throughout the event, as she had not recorded a medal-winning distance after her first four attempts. With the competition intensifying and rivals from Sri Lanka setting strong marks, Thuy Hang remained composed. In her final two jumps, she delivered when it mattered most, achieving 6.16 meters to surpass her competitors and secure the top spot on the podium. The victory highlighted not only her technical ability but also her mental resilience at a major international event.

Meanwhile, in traditional boat racing, Vietnam’s women’s team delivered another strong showing. A crew of 14 athletes competed in the 100-meter event and finished with a time of 28.516 seconds, earning the silver medal. The Vietnamese team narrowly missed out on gold, finishing just 0.256 seconds behind the host nation, China, in a tightly contested race.

With these two medals collected during the morning session, Vietnam temporarily climbed to fourth place in the overall medal standings. The team currently trails China, the United Arab Emirates, and the Philippines, all of whom have secured two gold medals each.

The Asian Beach Games features a total of 62 medal events across 14 sports. Vietnam is competing in eight disciplines with a delegation of 55 athletes, aiming to build on this early success and continue its push for more podium finishes in the days ahead.
