Vietnam win special gold medal at 2026 Asian Beach Games

Hainan 30 April 2026 – Vietnam sports delegation won a special gold medal at the 2026 Asian Beach Games in the women’s beach handball event. It was also the final gold medal awarded at the Games in Hainan, China.

On April 30, the final event of the tournament featured the women’s beach handball final between Vietnam and host nation China.

Thanks to their consistent performances in recent international competitions, the Vietnam women’s beach handball team entered the match as slight favorites against the hosts.

From the opening minutes, Vietnam showed their quality and at one point built a four-point lead. However, backed by strong home support, China fought back impressively and kept the match level throughout the first half, forcing it into a decisive final play. In the key moment, Dam Thi Thanh Huyen scored the winning point to give Vietnam a dramatic 20–18 victory in the opening set.

The second set was equally intense, with both teams exchanging points in a thrilling battle. In the final moments, Zhao Ye scored to help China edge the set 21–20, leveling the match overall.

With both teams winning one set each, the final had to be decided by a shoot-out, similar to a penalty shootout in football. In the decisive moments, the Vietnamese players showed greater composure and determination, defeating China 9–6 to secure the gold medal.

This gold medal was not only Vietnam’s third gold at the Games but also the final gold medal awarded at the 2026 Asian Beach Games. Thanks to the victory, Vietnam climbed to fourth place overall in the medal standings, finishing the tournament with a total of 3 golds, 5 silvers, and 5 bronzes.
