Late drama as Vietnam U17 women’s team hold Thailand to draw

Suzhou, 1 May 2026 – Vietnam U17 women’s team began their campaign at the 2026 AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Thailand U17 women.

Thailand started the opening match strongly and took the lead in the 26th minute through a powerful angled finish from Mirika Sheila. However, Vietnam responded well and equalized in the 35th minute thanks to a stunning free-kick from Thu Phuong.

Unfortunately for Vietnam, Thailand regained the advantage just two minutes later when Thidawan Wangchin scored from close range to make it 2-1. The score remained unchanged deep into stoppage time, leaving Vietnam on the verge of defeat in their opening match.

But in the 90+2 minute, Thanh Lam emerged as the hero with a dramatic equalizer, helping Vietnam secure a valuable 2-2 draw.

The result provides a major confidence boost for Vietnam U17 women ahead of their remaining Group A matches against China on May 4 and Myanmar on May 7.

According to the tournament format, the top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals. The four semi-finalists of the tournament will qualify for the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.
