From Maranhão to Vietnam: Brazil watches in awe as Rafaelson becomes an Asian icon

Brazil, 7 June 2026 – It is not every day that a boy from the backlands of Maranhão becomes a national hero — in another country. But that is precisely what Rafaelson has done, and Brazilian football is finally starting to pay attention.

The striker, born in the small town of Pirapemas, quietly left Brazil through the back door after a spell at Vitória in Salvador. No fanfare, no big European move, no headlines. He simply packed his bags and headed to Southeast Asia. What happened next, however, is the stuff of football folklore.

In the top flight of Vietnamese football, Rafaelson has already racked up an extraordinary 72 goals, and has delivered ten hat-tricks since arriving in the country in 2021 — a frequency that would make any Brazilian Serie A striker envious.

While Brazilian football was busy looking elsewhere, Rafaelson was quietly doing something almost unheard of. He completed the naturalization process in 2024, took on the Vietnamese name Nguyen Xuan Son, earned a call-up to the national team, and proceeded to win the Southeast Asian Cup as champion, top scorer, and MVP. Brazil produced a player who went abroad and became the face of another nation’s football. That deserves a moment of reflection.

With 120 matches, 90 goals, and 15 assists in the Vietnamese league, he has also been named “Athlete of the Year” at the Hanoi Opera House — an honour that few Brazilian players have ever received anywhere in Asia.

There were difficult moments too. A serious fracture in the Southeast Asian Cup final against Thailand kept him off the pitch at the most critical moment, but even then, his composure and dignity moved an entire nation.

His 50th win in the V.League 1 arrived alongside a goal in a 3–2 victory over Ninh Binh FC — another number added to a career that Brazil, frankly, should be celebrating far more loudly.

His stated ambition is to lead Vietnam to the 2030 World Cup. Brazil gave the world Pelé, Ronaldo and Neymar. It also gave Vietnam its greatest footballing hero. That story is worth telling.
