Key players missing as Vietnam resume training after Indonesia victory

Hanoi, 5 August 2026 – Vietnam national football team returned to training at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Centre on the afternoon of August 5, following their impressive 3-0 victory over Indonesia in Group A of the ASEAN Cup 2026.

However, head coach Kim Sang-sik’s latest session attracted attention due to the absence of several important players, including some of the team’s naturalized stars.

Nguyen Tai Loc and Do Hoang Hen were not present on the training pitch. Goalkeepers Patrik Le Giang and Dang Van Lam were also missing, leaving the squad slightly disrupted as preparations continued for the final group-stage match.

To maintain sufficient numbers in training, the coaching staff called up young goalkeeper Duc Duy from U23 Vietnam to work alongside the senior national team.

The players began the session with recovery exercises and light running before moving on to tactical drills. They later took part in a 10-versus-10 practice match as Kim continued to fine-tune his plans for the upcoming fixture.

The win over Indonesia placed Vietnam in a strong position in the race for the semifinals. After four matches, Kim’s side have collected seven points and currently sit top of Group A, ahead of Singapore on goal difference.

Vietnam need only a draw against Cambodia in their final group match to guarantee qualification for the knockout stage. A victory would ensure that Kim Sang-sik’s team finish at the top of the group, potentially giving them a more favourable position heading into the semifinals.
