Hanoi, 6 August 2026 – Vietnam head coach Kim Sang-sik and midfielder Nguyen Hai Long have firmly defended the ASEAN Cup after criticism of the tournament surfaced on social media following Vietnam’s impressive 3-0 victory over Indonesia at Pakansari Stadium.
The debate gained momentum after Vietnam’s win, with many comments—particularly from Indonesian supporters—downplaying the significance of the competition. Critics argued that Indonesia were unable to field their strongest squad because several Europe-based players were not released by their clubs, as the ASEAN Cup is held outside the FIFA international match calendar.
Speaking ahead of Vietnam’s final Group A match against Cambodia, Kim made it clear that his team treats every international fixture with the utmost respect, regardless of outside opinions.
“I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But for us, every tournament and every match is important,” Kim said during the pre-match press conference.
“We always prepare thoroughly, carefully plan for each opponent, and do everything we can to achieve the best possible result while contributing to the development of Vietnamese football.”
Nguyen Hai Long echoed his coach’s sentiments, stressing that representing the national team is a privilege that should never be taken for granted.
“Everyone has the right to express their own views,” Hai Long said.
“As for me, every match for the Vietnam national team is important. Whenever I have the opportunity to wear the national team jersey, I will always give my all.”
Vietnam currently lead Group A with seven points following four matches. Kim Sang-sik’s side will secure top spot in the group with a victory over Cambodia in their final fixture, scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on August 7.
At the same time, Singapore and Indonesia will face off in a decisive encounter, with the remaining semifinal berth from Group A still up for grabs.
