Former Vietnam national team head coach Phan Thanh Hung passes away aged 66

Hanoi, 11 August 2026 – Vietnamese football is mourning the passing of former national team head coach Phan Thanh Hung, who died at the age of 66 on the evening of August 11 following a period of serious illness.

News of his death sent shockwaves through the country’s football community. The Da Nang-born coach was widely regarded as one of Vietnam’s most accomplished and influential homegrown managers, leaving a significant mark on the sport during a coaching career spanning more than two decades.

Just two days before his passing, Phan Thanh Hung was honored by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) with the commemorative medal “For the Cause of Vietnamese Football”, recognizing his long-standing contributions to the development of the game in the country.

Hung spent several years working within Vietnam’s national-team system. He served as an assistant coach of the senior national side between 2008 and 2011, before taking charge of Vietnam U23 and eventually being appointed head coach of the Vietnam national team in 2012.

His influence was equally significant at club level. Hung enjoyed notable spells with Da Nang and Hanoi T&T, the predecessor of today’s Hanoi FC. During his time with the capital club, he helped establish a distinctive playing philosophy and laid important foundations for the success Hanoi would enjoy in the years that followed.

His legacy, however, extends far beyond trophies and results.

Throughout his career, Hung earned widespread respect from fellow coaches, players and football officials for his calm personality, modern tactical thinking and commitment to developing young talent. Numerous players benefited from his guidance, with his ability to identify and nurture emerging footballers becoming one of the defining characteristics of his coaching career.

His passing represents a significant loss for Vietnamese football and brings to an end the journey of a coach whose influence stretched across generations.

Phan Thanh Hung leaves behind a lasting legacy as a coach, mentor and one of the most respected figures in modern Vietnamese football.
