Vietnam U21 women’s volleyball team falls to Argentina at 2025 U21 World Championship

Indonesia, 11 August, 2025 – On the morning of August 11, the Vietnam U21 women’s volleyball team faced a tough challenge against Argentina in the 2025 U21 World Championship. Despite a strong start, the Vietnamese side could not pull off an upset against the higher-ranked South American opponents.

Vietnam entered the first set with confidence and executed a well-structured game plan. A combination of varied attacking plays and solid blocking allowed head coach Nguyen Trong Linh’s players to take control early. Star spiker Dang Thi Hong shone brightly, converting almost every approach into points. With her consistent performance and the team’s cohesive play, Vietnam convincingly won the opening set 25-10, delivering a strong statement.

However, the comfortable win in the first set sparked an immediate response from Argentina. The South American side quickly regrouped and raised their level, while the Vietnamese team unexpectedly lost momentum. Taking full advantage of their superior height and physical strength, Argentina steadily built their lead in the second set and leveled the match with a 25-20 victory.

The momentum completely shifted from that point. In the third set, Vietnam struggled to keep pace with Argentina’s powerful serves and fast transitions. Errors began to creep into the Vietnamese side, making it difficult to maintain offensive pressure. Argentina capitalized and dominated the set 25-15.

In the fourth and decisive set, Argentina maintained their control, forcing Vietnam into defensive situations and limiting their attacking options. Despite efforts from the Vietnamese players to rally, Argentina’s composure and tactical efficiency prevailed, sealing another 25-15 win to close out the match 3-1.

With this result, Vietnam drops to second place in their group, while Argentina moves to the top with four consecutive victories. The defeat is a setback for Vietnam’s campaign but also a valuable lesson in maintaining consistency against high-level opposition.

Head coach Nguyen Trong Linh is expected to make adjustments ahead of Vietnam’s next crucial match against Puerto Rico on August 12. A win in that encounter will be key to securing a favorable position heading into the knockout stages of the tournament.

This performance, despite the loss, highlighted Vietnam’s potential when playing at their best — particularly the outstanding contributions from Dang Thi Hong and the team’s strong first-set display. Maintaining that level throughout an entire match will be essential if they aim to progress deep into the competition.
