Hai Phong, 16 August, 2025 – The highly anticipated semifinals of the AFF Women’s Cup 2025 take place today, August 16, with the spotlight on the clash between Vietnam and Australia at 20:00 at Lach Tray Stadium, Hai Phong. For captain Huynh Nhu and her teammates, this will be a major challenge, as the young Australian squad, while youthful in age, are far from inexperienced.
Australia have brought a talented U23 lineup that features several players already established in the A-League Women, the country’s top-tier league. Their squad also includes three players with senior international experience — Isabel Gomez, Bryleeh Henry, and goalkeeper Chloe Lincoln. Furthermore, the team boasts several names who have competed at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, such as Holly Furphy, Naomi Chinnama, and Sofia Sakalis.
Their group stage journey was one of steady improvement. After a shaky start with a 1-2 loss to Myanmar, the Australians rebounded strongly, edging the Philippines 1-0 before demolishing Timor Leste 9-0 — the most lopsided result of the tournament so far. That emphatic victory highlighted the squad’s attacking power and resilience, suggesting the opening defeat was more an issue of acclimatization to Vietnam’s hot and humid conditions than a reflection of their true strength. With over a week of competition under their belt, Australia now appear fully settled and prepared to challenge any opponent.
Vietnam, meanwhile, enjoyed a flawless group stage, defeating Cambodia (6-0), Indonesia (7-0), and Thailand (1-0) to finish top of Group A. However, as head coach Mai Duc Chung acknowledged, those matches came against weaker opposition. Facing Australia will be an entirely different prospect, as the hosts will be tested against a squad combining youthful energy with international pedigree.
Compounding the challenge for Vietnam is the absence of midfielder Duong Thi Van, who is sidelined with injury. Her loss leaves a gap in the middle of the pitch, although youngster Hai Linh impressed in the crucial win over Thailand. Still, the semifinal will be a much sterner test for her and the entire midfield unit.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, coach Mai Duc Chung emphasized the balance between the two sides. “Both teams have equal strength. The Australian players are young, strong, and quick to adapt. Although we have one extra day of rest, that is only theoretical. We have prepared carefully and are determined to give our best. I hope the fans will come to the stadium in large numbers to support the team,” he stated.
The semifinal between Vietnam and Australia promises to be one of the highlights of the AFF Women’s Cup 2025, with both teams eyeing a place in the final. Kickoff is at 20:00 tonight at Lach Tray Stadium.
