Hanoi, 15 September, 2025 – The coaching staff of the Vietnam national badminton team has decided to select Nguyen Thuy Linh and Vu Thi Trang to represent the country in the women’s singles event at the upcoming 33rd SEA Games in 2025.
Speaking about the decision, Vietnam Badminton Federation General Secretary Le Thanh Ha explained: “We had detailed discussions with the badminton department of the Vietnam Sports Administration and the national coaching staff to ensure the best possible representation at SEA Games 33. For women’s singles, Nguyen Thuy Linh and Vu Thi Trang are currently the most consistent players in terms of performance, and they are expected to be chosen for the event. We hope both athletes can reach peak form by December.”
This will not be the first time the duo represents Vietnam in women’s singles at the SEA Games. Two years ago, at SEA Games 32 in Cambodia, both Thuy Linh and Vu Thi Trang advanced to the quarterfinals but fell short of reaching the medal rounds. At SEA Games 31, they were also Vietnam’s singles representatives.
Veteran player Vu Thi Trang remains a cornerstone of Vietnamese women’s badminton. A decade ago, she made history by reaching the semifinals at SEA Games 28 in Singapore in 2015, securing a bronze medal — still her best result in singles at the regional multi-sport event. With her vast experience and steady level of play, Vu Thi Trang is expected to be a strong contender once again.
Meanwhile, Nguyen Thuy Linh continues to be the flagbearer for Vietnam badminton on the international stage. She recently finished as runner-up at the Vietnam Open 2025, falling to China’s Cai Yanyan in the final. Currently ranked inside the world’s top 20, Thuy Linh has set her sights firmly on winning her first individual SEA Games medal this December. Despite competing in multiple SEA Games, she has yet to medal in singles, with her best achievement being a women’s team bronze at SEA Games 31 in Hanoi in May 2022.
In 2025, Nguyen Thuy Linh has already featured at major tournaments including the Asian Championships and the World Championships. She exited in the first round of the continental competition but progressed to the third round at the World Championships, proving her ability to compete at the highest level. Following the Vietnam Open, she is now competing at the China Masters 2025, a BWF World Tour Super 750 event, before continuing with other key international tournaments in October as part of her preparation for the SEA Games.
With a blend of youth, talent, and experience, the combination of Nguyen Thuy Linh and Vu Thi Trang provides Vietnam with a solid chance of breaking into the medal rounds in the women’s singles event at SEA Games 33.
