BREAKING: Hanoi FC officially appoints former Liverpool star as new head coach

Hanoi, 4 October 2025 – Hanoi FC has officially confirmed the appointment of former Liverpool and Australia star Harry Kewell as the club’s new head coach, marking a historic step in the capital team’s ambition to strengthen domestic dominance and expand its footprint on the continental stage.

Kewell, 46, is widely known among Vietnamese football fans for his illustrious career both as a player and as a coach in Europe. With his vast experience, Hanoi FC expects him to bring fresh ideas, modern football philosophies, and international expertise to elevate the club in the V.League and in AFC competitions.

Born in 1978, Harry Kewell enjoyed a glittering career in England’s Premier League, first making his name with Leeds United before moving to Liverpool. During his time at Anfield, he won the UEFA Champions League in the 2004/05 season and lifted the FA Cup in 2005/06. On the international stage, Kewell earned 56 caps for the Australian national team, scoring 17 goals and representing his country at two FIFA World Cups (2006 and 2010).

After retiring at the age of 36, Kewell transitioned into management in 2017, coaching several clubs in England including Crawley Town, Notts County, Oldham Athletic, and Barnet. In 2022, he joined Scottish giants Celtic as an assistant coach under Ange Postecoglou. Most recently, Kewell took charge of Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan, guiding the club to a runners-up finish in the AFC Champions League 2023/24.

For Hanoi FC, one of the most successful clubs in Vietnam over the past two decades, the appointment signals a clear message: the club is determined not only to maintain its domestic success but also to rise as a competitive force in Asian football. The decision to bring in a figure of Kewell’s stature reflects Hanoi FC’s long-term vision of modernizing its football identity and reaching continental heights.

“Harry Kewell is not only a household name in world football, but also a coach with international experience. His arrival in Hanoi highlights both the club’s appeal and its ambition to grow beyond Vietnam’s borders. We believe his leadership will mark the beginning of a new era,” a representative of Hanoi FC stated.

Following this appointment, Yusuke Adachi, who temporarily served as interim head coach for three matches, will return to his role as Technical Director. The Japanese expert will continue overseeing Hanoi FC’s first team development strategy while also strengthening the club’s youth academy system.

With Harry Kewell at the helm, Hanoi FC looks to rediscover its competitive edge in the V.League 2025/26 season and send a powerful message about its long-term goals: building a modern identity, attracting global attention, and striving for continental success.
