U22 Vietnam made a strong start at the CFA Team China – Panda Cup 2025 by defeating hosts U22 China 1-0 in Chengdu, with the only goal of the match scored by Pham Minh Phuc in the second half. The victory not only marked a confident opening for Vietnam but also placed the team second in the standings, just behind U22 South Korea after the first round.
This result also reflects U22 Vietnam’s clear improvement compared to their two previous encounters with the same opponent, which ended in a 1-1 draw and a 1-2 defeat. Speaking after the match, head coach Dinh Hong Vinhemphasized that the team’s progress came from their enhanced mentality and game control.
“Previously, we often allowed ourselves to be drawn into our opponents’ tempo,” coach Vinh explained. “But today, U22 Vietnam took the initiative — pressing high, maintaining compact defensive lines, and controlling the rhythm through smart ball circulation.”
The 49-year-old tactician also expressed satisfaction with his players’ collective evolution, particularly in high-pressing execution, quick transitions, and small-group defensive organization. “What pleased me most was the players’ discipline and composure. They showed patience and mental strength during decisive moments, especially toward the end of the match,” he added.
Coach Vinh noted that the Panda Cup provides valuable experience for the squad ahead of key upcoming tournaments, such as the 33rd SEA Games and the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup Finals.
After the opening win, U22 Vietnam will face U22 South Korea on November 15 before concluding the tournament against U22 Uzbekistan on November 18.
