U22 Vietnam and U22 Malaysia set for decisive battle for semi-final spot

Bangkok, 11 December 2025 – A draw may be enough for both sides to progress, but U22 Vietnam still aim for victory against U22 Malaysia at 16:00 on December 11 to secure a place in the semifinals as the top team of Group B.

The clash between U22 Vietnam and U22 Malaysia is shaping up to be one of the most decisive fixtures of the men’s football tournament at SEA Games 33, with both teams holding their fate in their own hands. With three points each after their opening matches, the two sides enter the final round of group-stage fixtures knowing that even a draw could all but guarantee passage to the semi-finals. However, the broader standings across the three groups add extra layers of intrigue to this crucial encounter.

In Group A, U22 Thailand and U22 Singapore will face off to determine which team advances. A victory for either side would leave the runner-up with just three points. If Thailand win, Singapore — currently on a goal difference of minus two — will be in serious danger of elimination, even if they finish second, as their numbers place them at a disadvantage when compared to second-placed teams in other groups. Even in the scenario of a draw, Singapore’s poor goal difference makes it difficult for them to compete for the best runner-up spot unless either Vietnam or Malaysia secure a win.

Group C is also nearing resolution. U22 Philippines have already secured a semi-final berth after two consecutive victories. U22 Indonesia and U22 Myanmar, meanwhile, must win at all costs to keep alive slim hopes of progressing as the best second-placed team.

Given these developments, both U22 Vietnam and U22 Malaysia find themselves in a favourable position. A draw in their head-to-head meeting would likely send both teams through, as their current three-point tally stands strong compared with probable second-placed sides in Groups A and C. Malaysia, with a superior goal difference of +3 compared to Vietnam’s +1, currently top Group B.

Despite this advantageous context, U22 Vietnam under coach Kim Sang Sik remain committed to pursuing a victory. Securing three points would allow Vietnam to qualify as group winners, avoid a potentially tougher semi-final opponent, and also dispel doubts after a laboured 2-1 win over U22 Laos in their opening match. That performance suggested Vietnam may still have more to show, especially in terms of intensity and cohesion. Facing Malaysia — a physically stronger and tactically well-organised opponent — will provide a clearer measure of the team’s true capabilities.

The spotlight once again falls on Nguyen Dinh Bac, Vietnam’s standout performer against Laos with a decisive brace. His sharp movement, strength and finishing will be crucial if Vietnam hope to unlock Malaysia’s defence. The match will also be a key opportunity for several other young talents to prove their readiness on the regional stage.

The decisive fixture between U22 Vietnam and U22 Malaysia will kick off at 16:00 on 11 December, promising high stakes, tactical tension and potentially dramatic twists as both teams battle for a place in the SEA Games 33 semi-finals.
