Khuat Van Khang: U23 Vietnam’s semi-final run carries special national significance

Saudi Arabia, 17 January 2026 – Captain Khuat Van Khang believes U23 Vietnam’s qualification for the semi-finals of the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 holds special meaning, as it contributes to the nationwide spirit of pride and celebration ahead of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

In the early hours of January 17, U23 Vietnam produced a resilient performance to defeat U23 United Arab Emirates 3-2 after extra time, officially securing a place in the semi-finals of the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026. The result marked Vietnam’s return to the continental last four after an eight-year wait, following the historic run at Thường Châu in 2018.

Compared to the achievement of the previous generation, this victory under Kim Sang-sik was regarded as even more convincing. U23 Vietnam were twice pegged back by the opposition, yet maintained composure, belief and tactical discipline to emerge victorious in a dramatic contest.

In the quarter-final, Nguyen Le Phat and Nguyen Dinh Bac both found the net to give Vietnam the lead on two occasions, before defender Pham Minh Phuc scored the decisive goal in the 101st minute, sealing a memorable 3-2 win and sending the Vietnamese bench and supporters into celebration.

Speaking after the match, captain Khuat Van Khang highlighted the importance of coaching decisions, particularly the early introduction of Dinh Bac midway through the first half. According to Van Khang, the substitution added energy and greater control to Vietnam’s play. “The whole team had complete trust in coach Kim Sang-sik’s decisions. This victory is the result of collective effort and is a gift for Vietnamese fans,” he said.

The midfielder, currently playing for The Cong Viettel, also stressed the deeper motivation driving the team. “We always play with endless energy and motivation. The greatest motivation comes from wearing the national colors, striving for higher goals, and contributing to the joyful atmosphere welcoming the 14th National Congress,” Van Khang shared.

At the same time, he acknowledged that the match offered important lessons. Conceding two goals from headers, according to Van Khang, is an issue the team must address if they aim to go further at the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 and in future tournaments. “These are valuable lessons that we must learn from ahead of the semi-final,” he added.

U23 Vietnam’s semi-final opponent will be confirmed after the quarter-final clash between U23 Uzbekistan and U23 China, scheduled for 18:30 on January 17. Vietnam’s semi-final match is set to take place at 22:30 on January 20.
