[OFFICIAL] Vietnam U23 squad for the U23 Asian Championship: Coach Hoang Anh Tuan cuts the two tallest players

Head Coach Hoang Anh Tuan has finalized the roster for the U23 Vietnam team set to compete in the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024.

After a series of training camps and friendly matches, a decisive cut has left four players out of the journey to the Asian stage.

The players not making the squad include goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien and defenders Nguyen Thanh Khai and Nguyen Duc Anh, along with midfielder Ha Van Phuong. Notably, Tran Trung Kien and Nguyen Thanh Khai are the tallest members of the team, standing at 1.91m and 1.87m respectively, highlighting the significant physical presence they would have brought to the team.

Coach Tuan explained that the selection was meticulously made based on several critical assessments including technical skills, current form, and the ability to meet the team’s tactical demands. This thorough evaluation ensured that only the most prepared athletes would represent Vietnam at the prestigious tournament.

During a team meeting today, which included Team Leader Nguyen Quoc Hoi and Coach Tuan, the final selection was announced to the squad. The leaders took the opportunity to motivate the four players who did not make the cut, encouraging them to continue working hard and remain ready for future national team call-ups.

Looking ahead, tomorrow morning (April 16), Team Leader Doan Anh Tuan along with several assistant coaches will attend a technical meeting to discuss further preparations. Meanwhile, Coach Hoang Anh Tuan is scheduled to participate in a press conference ahead of the group stage matches.

Due to AFC’s regulations to preserve the pitch quality, teams are not allowed to train on the competition fields. Consequently, the players will tour Al Jaloub Stadium, where they will kick off their campaign against U23 Kuwait, to familiarize themselves with the venue and its facilities. This proactive approach aims to ensure that the team is well-prepared and adjusted to the environment before their critical opening match.
