Cong Phuong, the celebrated Vietnamese footballer, made his first starting appearance for Yokohama FC in a match against Okayama in the second round of the 2024 Emperor’s Cup on April 24th at 5:00 PM.
This milestone marks the first time Cong Phuong has started in a game for Yokohama FC. Previously, during his tenure in the J-League 1, he had not been registered to play in any league matches and had only made a brief one-minute appearance during added time in a J-League Cup game last season.
Despite the limited playtime and Yokohama FC’s relegation from J-League 1 to J-League 2, Cong Phuong chose to remain with the Japanese club instead of returning to Vietnam, contrary to widespread speculation.
In March, Cong Phuong was called up to the Vietnamese national team in preparation for two matches against the Indonesian team in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Unfortunately, he had to withdraw from the national squad due to a recurrence of an ankle injury, returning to his club duties in silence.
Cong Phuong’s start in the Emperor’s Cup is seen as a new chapter in his career at Yokohama FC, providing him with an opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities and adaptability in a competitive environment. His participation is keenly watched by supporters, who are eager to see if this marks a turning point in his utilization by the club.
Yokohama FC’s decision to start Cong Phuong also indicates a possible strategic shift as the team adjusts to life in J-League 2 and seeks to harness his talent to enhance their campaign in the national cup and league competitions. His performance in these games could very well dictate his future with Yokohama FC and potentially reignite his international career.
