FIFA Instructor Trains Vietnamese Referees
On the morning of June 4, an advanced training course on VAR (Video Assistant Referee) operations, organized by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), the Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF), and the VFF Refereeing Committee, officially commenced. The training program for referees will run for five days, from June 4 to June 8.
VFF President Tran Quoc Tuan highlighted the importance of the training session, which is held in collaboration with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, a leading nation in Asian football with high-quality refereeing standards.
“Through our strong cooperative relationship, VFF has sought support from the Saudi Arabian Football Federation for referee training, including sending experts to assist and gradually transferring modern technologies that can be applied to Vietnamese football,” Tran Quoc Tuan stated.
Leading the advanced training session is Mr. Farkhad Abdullaev, an instructor from the International Football Federation (FIFA). President Tran Quoc Tuan affirmed the necessity of Mr. Farkhad Abdullaev’s presence, emphasizing that his extensive experience as a top FIFA instructor would provide valuable knowledge and expertise to Vietnamese VAR referees.
“The 2023-2024 season is in its decisive phase. Referees and assistant referees must continually learn and strive to meet the requirements and master VAR technology,” Tran Quoc Tuan remarked.
Mr. Farkhad Abdullaev, who is directly involved in teaching the course, expressed his enthusiasm for supporting VFF’s overall refereeing work, not just focusing on VAR operations. “In this course, we will focus on key issues related to VAR interventions. We will also share experiences from major international tournaments. The most important thing is to follow and correctly apply all FIFA’s VAR operational standards,” he stated.
VAR for All Matches Next Season
President Tran Quoc Tuan announced that two VAR-equipped vehicles, funded by a FIFA project, are being expedited to ensure that all matches in the 2024-2025 season will utilize VAR. The VPF and the Refereeing Committee must prepare technically and train personnel to achieve this goal for the upcoming season.
VFF Refereeing Committee Chairman Dang Thanh Ha reminded the VAR officials to focus on resolving any remaining issues to ensure proper operation of the VAR system. “We have gone through a period of VAR application and there are many issues we need to learn and improve. Given these urgent matters, we are here during the league’s break to emphasize that VAR technology is new, and we must continually learn and enhance our professional skills,” he said.
Chairman Dang Thanh Ha expressed hope that the training course would help referees improve their VAR knowledge, operational methods, and adherence to FIFA’s VAR regulations.
The advanced VAR training program will last for five consecutive days, during which 29 VAR and assistant VAR (AVAR) referees will undergo tests, practical exercises on the equipment, and video-based scenario training.
As the Vietnamese national team prepares for their upcoming match against the Philippines, both players and officials are gearing up for a period of intense preparation and adaptation, aiming for success on and off the pitch. The combination of tactical training for the national team and the advanced VAR training for referees marks a significant step forward for Vietnamese football, ensuring that all aspects of the game are held to the highest standards.
