Filip Nguyen shares his journey and World Cup dreams with FIFA

On the official FIFA website, goalkeeper Filip Nguyen opened up about his naturalization process in Vietnam and his dream of playing in the World Cup with the Vietnam national team.

Filip Nguyen is a notable naturalized player for the Vietnam national team. After a long journey, the Czech-born goalkeeper has finally realized his dream of wearing the colors of his father’s homeland.

Of course, the 31-year-old goalkeeper has many goals and dreams with the Vietnam national team. He shared his thoughts in an interview with FIFA.

“My career began in the Czech Republic. I was first called up to the Czech national team during the Covid-19 period. After that, I was called up a few more times but did not get to play,” Filip Nguyen shared with FIFA.

Speaking about his opportunity to wear the Vietnam national team jersey, the Hanoi Police FC goalkeeper said: “My father is Vietnamese. I have always been fascinated by the culture of this country and everything related to it.

My father didn’t teach me Vietnamese when I was young, so I had difficulty accessing Vietnamese culture, but I see it as a challenge. Now, I can speak Vietnamese.

It is an honor for me to wear the Vietnam national team jersey because my father is from this country. Whenever I play, my father is very proud of me.”

To wear the Vietnam national team jersey, Filip Nguyen went through a long naturalization process. Reflecting on this journey, the goalkeeper born in 1992 said: “The day I debuted for the Vietnam national team was an amazing experience. I felt relieved that the long naturalization process had finally succeeded. I was truly happy at that moment.

Listening to the Vietnamese national anthem, I really wanted to contribute to the country. I feel tremendous support from the fans here. I don’t want to disappoint them. I am proud and believe that I must give my best to bring joy to the fans.”

The Vietnam national team faces difficulties in the second round of World Cup 2026 qualifiers. After two defeats against Indonesia, Vietnam trails the rival by four points. To advance, “The Golden Dragons” need to win both matches against the Philippines and Iraq and hope that Indonesia earns no more than one point in their two matches.

Filip Nguyen spoke about Vietnam’s chances of advancing: “We still have two matches in the second round of World Cup 2026 qualifiers and hope the team can progress further. Unfortunately, Vietnam cannot decide its own fate. We will try our best to get all six points.

However, it is really challenging. Because we will have to travel to Iraq. I think the important thing is to focus on each match and try to perform our best in 90 minutes.”

The Vietnam national team recently appointed Kim Sang-sik as head coach. The South Korean coach is expected to bring a new energy to the team. Speaking about the new head coach, Filip Nguyen said: “We all hope that Coach Kim Sang-sik will revive the spirit of Vietnamese football once again.

I do not yet know Coach Kim Sang-sik’s coaching style, but if the Vietnam Football Federation trusts him, I believe he is a great coach and will show his qualities.”

Finally, Filip Nguyen spoke about the World Cup dream of the Vietnam national team: “I believe every professional player dreams of playing in the World Cup. It is the biggest stage in football. It would be incredible if Vietnam qualified for the World Cup for the first time.”

With Filip Nguyen’s dedication and the arrival of a new coach, the Vietnam national team is poised to make strides in their World Cup qualifying journey. Fans and players alike are filled with hope and anticipation as they look forward to the upcoming matches.
