Vietnamese badminton player Nguyen Thuy Linh stands a good chance of making history at the Paris 2024 Olympics after being drawn into a relatively favorable group.
On the afternoon of July 12, the Olympic organizers and the Badminton World Federation (BWF) held the draw for the badminton events at this year’s Games. Vietnam has two representatives in the badminton competition at Paris 2024: Le Duc Phat in men’s singles and Nguyen Thuy Linh in women’s singles.
In the women’s singles event, 39 players are divided into 13 groups, with the top player from each group advancing to the knockout stage. According to the draw results, Nguyen Thuy Linh is in Group K along with Beiwen Zhang from the United States and Tiffany Ho from Australia.
This draw is considered very favorable for Thuy Linh, as she has avoided strong contenders from China, Japan, and South Korea. Additionally, the top seed in the group, Beiwen Zhang, is a familiar opponent for Thuy Linh in international competitions, and the Vietnamese player has defeated her multiple times.
If Thuy Linh tops her group, she will make history as the first Vietnamese badminton player to advance past the group stage of an Olympic Games since BWF adopted the group stage format in 2012.
In the men’s singles event, 41 players are divided into 13 groups, with the top player from each group advancing to the knockout stage. Le Duc Phat is in Group K along with Prannoy Haseena Sunil Kumar from India and Fabian Roth from Germany. In this group, a realistic goal for Duc Phat would be to secure a win against Fabian Roth.
The badminton events at the Paris 2024 Olympics will take place from July 28 to August 5. With the draw now set, both Nguyen Thuy Linh and Le Duc Phat can focus on their preparations, aiming to achieve their best possible performances on the Olympic stage.
Nguyen Thuy Linh’s Path to Glory
Nguyen Thuy Linh, currently ranked 26th in the world, is considered one of Vietnam’s top badminton talents. Her placement in Group K provides her with a golden opportunity to advance further than any Vietnamese badminton player has before. Beiwen Zhang, though a seasoned competitor, has faced defeats from Thuy Linh in past encounters, giving the Vietnamese player a psychological edge.
Should Thuy Linh secure the top spot in her group, it would mark a significant milestone in Vietnamese sports history, showcasing the progress and potential of Vietnamese badminton on the global stage.
Le Duc Phat’s Challenge
In the men’s singles, Le Duc Phat, ranked 70th globally, faces a tougher challenge. His main competitor, Prannoy Haseena Sunil Kumar from India, is a formidable opponent. However, a victory against Fabian Roth would be a notable achievement and a confidence booster for Duc Phat, setting a positive tone for his Olympic campaign.
Preparing for the Olympics
Both Nguyen Thuy Linh and Le Duc Phat have been training intensively in Bac Ninh under the guidance of Indonesian experts, focusing on honing their skills and strategies for the upcoming matches. Their participation and potential success at the Paris 2024 Olympics not only highlight their individual talents but also reflect the growing stature of Vietnamese badminton on the world stage.
The anticipation and excitement surrounding their Olympic journey are palpable, with fans eagerly awaiting their performances. As they step onto the courts in Paris, they carry with them the hopes and dreams of a nation, aiming to make their mark and inspire future generations of Vietnamese athletes.
