On the eve of the VTV Cup 2024 women’s volleyball international final in Ninh Binh, the Vietnam women’s volleyball team received incredible news: for the first time in history, they have secured a spot in the FIVB Women’s Championship 2025, often referred to as the World Cup of volleyball.
The Vietnam Volleyball Federation announced this morning, August 31, that the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) had officially confirmed Vietnam’s participation in the FIVB Women’s Championship 2025. The tournament will take place in Thailand from August 22 to September 7, 2025.
Just a day before this announcement, Thailand was named the host of the FIVB Women’s Championship 2025. This hosting status automatically grants them a spot as the host nation, allowing Asia to include one additional team. Vietnam, which finished fourth in the 2023 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship, has been selected to join other Asian powerhouses like China, Japan, and host Thailand, making them one of the four Asian representatives in the 2025 Championship.
Earlier, the Vietnam Volleyball Federation had been notified by FIVB about the possibility of the national women’s team participating in the 2025 World Championship. Following this, Vietnam completed the required application process to officially register for the tournament.
This achievement marks the first time in history that the Vietnam women’s volleyball team has qualified for the World Championship. The tournament will feature 32 teams, including the defending champions Serbia and 15 teams that performed well in continental championships (three from each continent). The remaining 16 spots will be filled by the host nation and 15 teams based on their world rankings who have not yet secured a spot.
The 32 teams set to compete in the FIVB Women’s Championship 2025 include Serbia, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Kenya, Egypt, Cameroon, Thailand, China, Japan, Turkey, Netherlands, Italy, Dominican Republic, USA, Canada, Poland, Germany, Belgium, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Puerto Rico, France, Cuba, Bulgaria, Sweden, Mexico, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Greece, and Vietnam.
Tonight at 7:30 PM in Ninh Binh, the Vietnam women’s volleyball team will face off against Russia’s Korabelka Club in the final of the VTV Cup 2024. Following this tournament, head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his team currently have no additional competitions scheduled for the remainder of 2024. However, with the historic qualification for the World Championship, it is anticipated that the team will reconvene early to prepare thoroughly for this prestigious global event.
