Nguyen Tien Linh continued his scoring form, but Binh Duong’s joy was short-lived as they conceded a 1-1 draw to Hai Phong in round two of V-League 2024-2025.
In the 2023-2024 season, Tien Linh managed just eight goals in 26 matches, averaging 0.3 goals per game. However, in the new season, the striker born in 1997 has already netted three goals in just two games.
Following his brace that helped Binh Duong come from behind to defeat Thanh Hoa 2-1, Tien Linh once again found the back of the net when his team hosted Hai Phong. After the match, head coach Hoang Anh Tuan praised Tien Linh, calling him “Vietnam’s best striker at the moment.”
Tien Linh’s goal against Hai Phong came from a penalty in the 25th minute. Nguyen Trung Hieu misjudged the ball’s drop, missed his control, and then accidentally stepped on Bui Vi Hao’s foot. After a five-minute review with the VAR room and a second look at the incident, referee Nguyen Van Phuc awarded the penalty. Tien Linh confidently converted the spot-kick, sending goalkeeper Dinh Trieu the wrong way and scoring decisively.
Tien Linh’s goal put him at the top of the V-League scoring charts for the 2024-2025 season, but his celebration was cut short as Binh Duong let the victory slip away. Hai Phong equalized in the 70th minute when Trieu Viet Hung chipped the ball into the box for Nguyen Huu Son, who fired a low, powerful shot into the far corner, beating goalkeeper Tran Minh Toan.
Binh Duong was also unlucky, as a shot in the 81st minute hit the crossbar. Failing to secure the win, Hoang Anh Tuan’s squad missed the opportunity to level with league leaders Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL). Binh Duong now sits second with four points after two games, trailing the top spot by two points.
In round four, on September 30, Binh Duong will face a tough test as they visit Hanoi Police FC. It promises to be a challenging match for Binh Duong, as their opponents are desperate for points after a stoppage-time equalizer from Hai Phong and a 0-1 loss to Thanh Hoa.
