Do Hung Dung: “Van Quyet is a role model for Vietnamese players.”

On the afternoon of October 5, the Vietnam national football team held their first training session to prepare for the upcoming friendly match against India, scheduled to take place on October 12 at Thien Truong Stadium (Nam Dinh).

Coach Kim Sang-sik has called up 27 players for this training camp. Ahead of the session, midfielder Do Hung Dung shared his thoughts on veteran player Nguyen Van Quyet, who has been recalled to the national team after a long absence.

“Van Quyet doesn’t often speak to the media, but his efforts are clear on the pitch. Maintaining form for over 10 years is no easy task. As a player who has consistently worked hard and contributed greatly to Hanoi FC, and now being trusted by coach Kim Sang-sik, Van Quyet truly serves as a role model for all players in Vietnam,” Hung Dung said.

Hung Dung, the captain of the Vietnam national team, emphasized the importance of patience and readiness for all players.

“I believe everyone, myself included, has to patiently wait for their opportunity. The key is how you seize that opportunity when it comes. It’s not just about me or Van Quyet; all players must maintain their passion and desire to be part of the team. Whether you shine or not also depends on timing—sometimes the opportunity comes when the timing isn’t right.”

Regarding Van Quyet’s impact, Hung Dung noted, “Learning from Van Quyet isn’t easy because every player’s journey is different. You can’t tell one player to mimic another. But younger players should learn from his experience in handling media interactions and maintaining composure, which helps them stay focused and unaffected by outside influences. In terms of technical skills, every player has their own strengths.”

The 1993-born midfielder also stressed the importance of teamwork: “The Vietnam national team needs to build a strong collective. Whether it’s Quang Hai, Van Quyet, or any other player, success requires a solid team. Sometimes, public attention can focus too much on a single player, which can have positive or negative effects.”

Hung Dung further added, “When we succeed, it’s important to recognize the contributions of the whole team. Whether playing or on the bench, everyone in the squad is putting in the effort. That’s why I hope people will pay attention to the entire team, not just one player.”

Regarding the mix of experience and youth in the squad, coach Kim Sang-sik has called up several promising young talents for the October training camp, including players like Tran Trung Kien (born 2003), Nguyen Quoc Viet (2003), Bui Vi Hao (2003), Nguyen Van Viet (2002), Nguyen Van Truong (2003), and Khuat Van Khang (2003). Despite their young age, the team aims to create a strong and balanced squad, blending the experience of veteran players with the energy of the new generation.

With the upcoming friendly against India, the Vietnam team will be using this time to refine their tactics and assess their squad ahead of the match on October 12.
