Nguyen Van Quyet cemented his legacy as the top domestic scorer in V-League history, scoring his 117th career goal in Hanoi FC’s 2-2 draw against Hai Phong on November 9. This historic milestone came in the 81st minute at Hang Day Stadium, surpassing Le Cong Vinh’s previous record by one goal and establishing Van Quyet as the most prolific Vietnamese striker in the league’s history.
The record-breaking moment was orchestrated by a smooth sequence involving Do Hung Dung, who passed to Pham Tuan Hai on the left wing. Tuan Hai then delivered a pinpoint pass behind Dang Van Toi, allowing Van Quyet to capitalize with a left-footed strike past goalkeeper Nguyen Dinh Trieu, putting Hanoi FC up 2-1.
Though Van Quyet now holds the domestic goal-scoring record with 117 goals across 15 V-League seasons, the all-time league record remains with naturalized Nigerian striker Hoang Vu Samson at 219 goals, followed by Argentine-born Do Merlo with 147 goals.
Following his goal, Van Quyet celebrated with the fans by pointing to the Hanoi FC logo on his jersey and raising his hands, acknowledging the support from the stands. However, the night ended on a bittersweet note for the seasoned striker, as Hanoi FC’s defense conceded a late equalizer just four minutes later. Hai Phong’s Nguyen Tuan Anh threaded a pass to Lucao, who beat goalkeeper Van Hoang to secure the 2-2 draw.
Entering Round 7, Hanoi FC, still grappling with underperforming foreign signings for the third consecutive season, opted to start with an all-domestic lineup under coach Le Duc Tuan. It was only in the second half, as Hai Phong began to tire, that Tuan introduced veteran Van Quyet and foreign forward Joao Pedro.
Despite careful game planning, an early error by goalkeeper Van Hoang disrupted Hanoi FC’s strategy. In the 9th minute, Hai Phong’s Lucao headed the ball toward the goal from a left-wing cross. The shot lacked power but slipped from Van Hoang’s grasp, allowing Lucao to slot home the rebound. With his brace, Lucao has now scored five goals against his former club Hanoi FC in four V-League appearances.
Hanoi FC responded with increased pressure, creating several attempts but struggling with cohesion and precision in finishing. After Van Quyet and Joao Pedro entered the game, they made an immediate impact. In the 51st minute, a passing combination from Hung Dung and Hai Long found Van Quyet, who laid the ball off for Pedro to curl it into the top-right corner, leveling the score at 1-1.
Shortly after, Van Quyet’s record-setting goal put Hanoi FC ahead, but a defensive misstep in setting an offside trap allowed Hai Phong to equalize, denying Hanoi FC their first win in four matches. This marked Hanoi FC’s fourth consecutive draw, following 1-1 results against Hanoi Police FC, Ha Tinh, and Thanh Hoa.
Despite the series of draws, Hanoi FC remains in contention for the LPBank V-League 2024 title. They currently sit seventh in the standings with 10 points, just two points behind league leaders Hoang Anh Gia Lai, who recently secured a 1-0 victory over Hanoi Police FC.
