Thailand national team star arrives in Viet Tri on crutches with teammates at midnight

Thailand national football team is facing a series of challenges as they prepare to meet Vietnam in the first leg of the AFF Cup 2024 final on January 2 at Viet Tri Stadium. Coming off a grueling 120-minute semifinal against the Philippines on December 30, the “War Elephants” are dealing with fatigue, injuries, and limited preparation time, putting them at a significant disadvantage.

Thailand earned their spot in the final with a hard-fought 4-3 aggregate victory over the Philippines. However, the extended match and high-intensity gameplay have taken a toll on the squad. Forward Teerasak Poeiphimai, who entered the match in the 64th minute, was forced off just 14 minutes later due to back pain. Thai media reports confirm that he underwent hospital checks, and his chances of recovering in time for the final appear slim. Adding to Thailand’s woes, Suphanat Muenta, who played a pivotal role by scoring the decisive goal in extra time, is also struggling with his fitness. Suphanat entered the semifinal despite not being fully recovered and reportedly suffered a high fever after the match, requiring hospitalization. He is expected to travel to Vietnam later than his teammates.

The tight schedule further compounds Thailand’s challenges. After their grueling semifinal, the team will travel to Vietnam in two groups on December 31, arriving in Hanoi before transferring to Phu Tho overnight. This compressed itinerary leaves them with just one training session on January 1 to prepare for the match. Coach Masatada Ishii acknowledged the difficulties his team faces, stating, “We only have two days of rest before the first leg of the final. Some players are injured, which is unfortunate. However, we will do our best with the remaining squad and plan for each match individually. Our goal remains to win both legs and claim the AFF Cup 2024 title.”

In stark contrast, Vietnam enjoys a more favorable position heading into the final. After their 3-1 semifinal victory over Singapore on December 29, Coach Kim Sang-sik’s team has had ample time to rest and prepare. Additionally, playing the first leg at home allows Vietnam to avoid the taxing travel schedule faced by their Thai counterparts. These advantages provide Vietnam with a solid foundation to approach the final confidently.

Despite these challenges, Thailand remains a formidable opponent, known for their resilience and ability to thrive under pressure. The “War Elephants” have demonstrated their capacity to overcome adversity, as seen in their comeback victories against Singapore in the group stage and the Philippines in the semifinal. Their tactical flexibility and mental toughness make them a dangerous adversary capable of turning the tide in critical moments.

Vietnam, however, must capitalize on their current advantages to secure a strong result in the first leg. While the home team holds the upper hand in terms of preparation and fitness, Thailand’s history of rising to the occasion serves as a cautionary reminder of their threat. The first-leg clash promises to be a compelling contest, with both teams vying for an edge in their pursuit of the AFF Cup 2024 title. Fans can expect an electrifying encounter as these two regional powerhouses battle for supremacy.
