Vietnamese striker Xuan Son has successfully undergone surgery following a severe leg injury sustained during the AFF Cup 2024 final. The procedure, conducted by Professor Tran Trung Dung, Director of the Orthopedic Trauma and Sports Medicine Center at Vinmec International General Hospital, was completed successfully, raising hopes for the player’s swift recovery.
The surgery, which lasted 1 hour and 30 minutes, addressed the complex fractures in Xuan Son’s leg. According to Professor Tran Trung Dung, the injury involved two significant bone fragments, measuring 3 cm and 7 cm in length. The medical team utilized intramedullary nailing without opening the fracture site, a minimally invasive technique designed to preserve anatomical alignment and minimize tissue disruption.
“We ensured the anatomical alignment of the fractured bones without displacing the fragments or opening the fracture site,” Professor Dung explained. “The procedure was performed with the assistance of ultrasound and CT imaging to ensure precise alignment and fixation. While this extended the surgery time, the outcome was excellent.”
Following the operation, Xuan Son was transferred to the recovery room, where he immediately began receiving cold therapy and localized massage treatments. According to Professor Dung, the player will start moving with crutches or a wheelchair as early as tomorrow. His rehabilitation will continue at the Vinmec Orthopedic Trauma and Sports Medicine Center, utilizing specialized equipment and therapies designed to support his recovery.
The success of the surgery marks a significant step forward for the 26-year-old striker, who had been a standout performer in the AFF Cup 2024. Despite his injury in the second leg of the final against Thailand, Xuan Son’s contributions to Vietnam’s championship run, including seven goals and two assists, earned him both the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament awards.
