Vietnam national football team coach Kim Sang Sik, who recently guided his squad to victory at the AFF Cup 2024, has shared insights into his coaching philosophy and his memorable journey. Speaking in an interview on Bgent’s YouTube channel alongside his representative, Kim detailed the principles that have shaped his career, including his recent successes with Vietnam and earlier achievements in the K.League.

Since clinching the AFF Cup title, Kim has been in high demand, both in Vietnam and South Korea. “I’ve received many interview requests. The media in both countries have shown great interest, which I find understandable. Throughout the AFF Cup journey, reporters and fans from both nations supported me and the team. This is my chance to express gratitude,” he said.

Reflecting on the victory, Kim described the profound emotions he experienced. “Happiness is the overwhelming feeling. This was my first time leading a national team, and I knew I had to maintain composure throughout the tournament. But when the final whistle blew in the second leg of the final against Thailand, I felt an immense sense of relief. Watching the team and fans celebrate, I couldn’t hold back my tears. Even my representative cried. It was one of the rare moments in years that I allowed myself to be emotional.”

Kim attributes his coaching success to his ability to learn from others and maintain a clear vision. “I’m honored to lead the Vietnam national team. I owe my position to the recommendations of my representative and former coach Park Hang Seo. I’ve built on the foundation he laid, constantly asking myself how to make this team stronger. I’ve sought advice from Coach Park, club coaches, and even local fans. I’ve maintained open communication with the players daily, and that approach remains central to my work.”

On his coaching philosophy, Kim emphasized fostering happiness and comfort within the team. “A coach’s basic duty is to guide players and staff, but forcing this can lead to burnout. I believe in creating a positive environment where players and staff feel happy and relaxed. They perform better when they’re in good spirits.”

Kim also discussed the potential of Vietnamese players competing in the K.League. “Vietnam has many talented players, but they need to develop further. Experience and resilience are critical for playing in Korea’s top league. They must prove they’re ready to compete in any team within the K.League.”

When asked hypothetically about which player he would bring to Vietnam, regardless of nationality, Kim replied, “Son Heung Min, of course. If he came to Vietnam, I’d treat him to pho and make him part of the team. He’d leave a significant mark on the squad.”

Kim’s celebratory dance moves have also caught attention, with many wondering if he trained in dance. Laughing, he clarified, “I didn’t study choreography. I simply dance out of joy. Like Psy, I aim to spread happiness to everyone around me.”

In coaching, Kim strikes a balance between discipline and approachability. “On the field, I maintain strict standards, but off the field, I prioritize creating a cheerful atmosphere. Success stems from positive energy, not rigid tactics like 4-4-2 or 3-5-2. My goal is to bring energy and joy to the team, which ultimately leads to success.”

Coach Kim Sang Sik’s leadership has not only earned him trophies but also the admiration of fans and players, underscoring his philosophy that happiness is a cornerstone of success.
