In the early hours of February 27, Vietnamese badminton player Nguyen Thuy Linh secured a victory over France’s LeOnice Huet in the opening round of the 2025 German Open.
At last year’s tournament, Thuy Linh made headlines by reaching the final and finishing as the runner-up. Despite her current form being less consistent, she remains a highly regarded competitor.
Heading into the match, Thuy Linh was ranked 29th in the world, while Huet held the 62nd position. The difference in rankings became apparent as the two clashed in the first round.
Huet started strong, establishing early leads of 3-0, 9-6, and 12-8 in the first game. However, Thuy Linh fought back to keep the scoreline competitive.
The French player extended her advantage to 18-14 and appeared close to taking the opening game. But Thuy Linh staged a remarkable comeback, stringing together seven consecutive points to turn the tables and win 21-18.
The second game was much smoother for the Vietnamese player. She quickly pulled ahead with commanding leads of 10-3 and 16-4 before sealing the match with a dominant 21-9 victory.
In the next round, Thuy Linh will face Indian shuttler Aakarshi Kashyap, currently ranked 48th. With Kashyap also struggling for form recently, Thuy Linh will have a strong opportunity to claim another win.
