On March 12, Mr. Tran Anh Tu submitted his resignation letter to the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), officially stepping down from all positions he currently holds. The VFF has confirmed receiving his resignation and will present the matter at the upcoming executive committee meeting. This decision marks a significant change in Vietnamese football governance, given Mr. Tran Anh Tu’s extensive contributions over the years.
Mr. Tran Anh Tu, commonly known as “Bau Tu,” has played a pivotal role in the development of Vietnamese football. In December 2017, he was elected Chairman of the Board of the Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF), where he oversaw the organization and administration of the country’s professional leagues. His leadership was reaffirmed through re-elections in 2020 and 2023, demonstrating the trust and confidence placed in him by the football community. Additionally, at the 9th VFF Congress in late 2022, he was the sole candidate for the position of Vice President in charge of professional affairs, further solidifying his influence within the sport.
Beyond his administrative roles, Mr. Tran Anh Tu has made substantial contributions to the growth of Vietnamese football, particularly in Futsal. Under his leadership and financial investment, Vietnam’s national Futsal team achieved remarkable success, qualifying for the FIFA Futsal World Cup in 2016 and 2021. His support for the sport has helped elevate Vietnam’s position on the global Futsal stage, earning recognition and respect internationally.
Additionally, Mr. Tran Anh Tu played a crucial role in the development of women’s football in Vietnam. Through various sponsorship initiatives, he provided financial backing for several clubs and the National Women’s Championship, ensuring sustainable growth for the sport. His efforts contributed to the improvement of facilities, training programs, and overall competitiveness of women’s football in the country.
With his resignation, Vietnamese football faces a period of transition as the VFF seeks to fill the leadership void left by one of its most influential figures. His departure raises questions about the future direction of professional football, Futsal, and women’s football in Vietnam. The executive committee’s upcoming meeting will likely determine how the VFF moves forward and who will step up to continue the progress initiated by Mr. Tran Anh Tu.
