Burundi president Évariste Ndayishimiye visits The Cong Viettel during historic trip to Vietnam

Hanoi, April 5, 2025 – On April 5, as part of his official visit to Vietnam, President of the Republic of Burundi Évariste Ndayishimiye and his high-level delegation paid a rare visit to The Cong Viettel Football Club. This marked an exceptional occasion, as it is uncommon for a head of state to visit a football club in Vietnam.

President Ndayishimiye and his delegation toured the club’s Tradition Room, marveling at historic trophies and watching footage chronicling the legacy of The Cong Viettel, Vietnam’s oldest and most decorated football club. As the former Chairman of the Burundi Olympic Committee for many years, Ndayishimiye explored Viettel Sports Company’s facilities, showing keen interest in youth training programs, coaching philosophy, and club operations.

Addressing the hosts, President Ndayishimiye said: “I thank Viettel Group for this warm welcome. I congratulate The Cong Viettel Football Club—I’m deeply impressed by your philosophy. We must embrace openness and innovation, and sports is a key avenue for that. Beyond high achievements, sports embody ethics, discipline, and profound human values. It’s a tool to guide the youth. I commend Viettel Group for its forward-thinking approach in building this team.”

During the visit, Ndayishimiye discussed potential cooperation between Burundi and Viettel Sports Company, emphasizing opportunities for Burundian players to train and study at The Cong Viettel. Tao Duc Thang, Chairman and General Director of Viettel Group, hailed the collaboration prospects as a significant step forward.

The entire The Cong Viettel squad turned out to greet the Burundian delegation. Team captain Bui Tien Dung had the honor of presenting flowers to Burundi’s leader, while U17 players from The Cong Viettel showcased their skills on the pitch. Ndayishimiye singled out the club’s ambition as his highlight, praising their daily efforts to advance Vietnamese football and contribute to the dream of “bringing Vietnam to the World Cup.”

This visit, a sidelight to Ndayishimiye’s April 3-6 trip at the invitation of President Luong Cuong, underscores growing Vietnam-Burundi ties as they mark 50 years of diplomatic relations. With Viettel’s Lumitel thriving in Burundi’s telecom sector, this sporting exchange hints at deeper future partnerships.
