Pleiku, April 6, 2025 – Hoang Anh Gia Lai delivered a historic 4-0 rout of Binh Duong in Round 17 of the V-League 2024-2025 at Pleiku Stadium today, marking their biggest-ever win over this opponent. Previously, Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s heaviest victory against Binh Duong was a 3-1 triumph in the 2016 V-League second leg, and they had never scored four against them. However, Binh Duong still holds the record for the largest margin in this rivalry—a 5-0 drubbing in the 2016 first leg—with four 4-1 wins, including this season’s opener.
Historically, Hoang Anh Gia Lai leads the head-to-head with 17 wins, 13 draws, and 14 losses. Binh Duong’s collapse was unexpected after their 2-1 National Cup semifinal qualification over Ninh Binh on March 29. Coach Nguyen Cong Manh rotated, benching striker Nguyen Tien Linh and midfielder Vo Hoang Minh Khoa, but a calamitous error from goalkeeper Tran Minh Toan in the 4th minute set the tone. Jairo Filho’s overhit pass saw Minh Toan misjudge a backheel clearance, stumble, and gift Tran Bao Toan an open-goal tap-in. Two minutes later, Chau Ngoc Quang’s mazy left-wing run led to a blocked cross, but Washington Brandao pounced to fire home a left-footed doubling.
Binh Duong’s disarray prompted a 13th-minute change—Vo Hoang Minh Khoa replaced Tran Dinh Khuong—but Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s counterattacks, led by Chau Ngoc Quang, kept them reeling. In the 24th minute, a Binh Duong defensive error saw Ngoc Quang cross, only for Tran Minh Vuong to mistime a header. Two minutes later, Ngoc Quang’s right-wing surge and cutback found Vo Dinh Lam, who slotted in the third from close range.
Binh Duong threw on Nguyen Tien Linh for Nguyen Thanh Nhan in the 39th minute, but the 28-year-old fluffed a tap-in from Ngo Tung Quoc’s cross. Tung Quoc then blazed over in the 43rd minute. In the second half, an open game ensued. Chau Ngoc Quang’s 53rd-minute chip beat Minh Toan but was cleared by Janclesio off the line, while Minh Khoa’s 16-meter strike rattled Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s bar.
Hoang Anh Gia Lai sealed it late. In the 89th minute, Phan Du Hoc’s break fed Tran Minh Vuong, whose angled shot went wide. In stoppage time, Cao Hoang Minh set up Marciel Silva to lob Minh Toan from 24 meters for 4-0. Marciel’s exuberant celebration earned a second yellow, leaving Hoang Anh Gia Lai short-handed for their April 12 clash with Hanoi Police FC. Still, their fifth win lifts them to eighth with 21 points, 12 above bottom-placed Da Nang (one game extra), while Binh Duong, with seven losses, sits sixth with 24.
