Hanoi Police FC plans contract extension for Doan Van Hau despite ongoing injury recovery

Van Hau's ability to play in the 2024 AFF Cup remains uncertain.

Hanoi, May 1, 2025 – Hanoi Police FC is actively negotiating to extend the contract of star left-back Doan Van Hau, one of Vietnam’s finest defenders, as his current deal nears its end. Despite the 1999-born player’s prolonged absence due to a persistent ankle injury, the 2023 V.League champions are determined to secure his future, per Vietnam Sports News.

Sources indicate Hanoi Police FC, based at Hang Day Stadium, is working closely with Van Hau and his agent to finalize a new two-year contract. The proposed deal includes generous terms, such as comprehensive support for his rehabilitation, reflecting the club’s commitment to his recovery, expected to conclude by late 2025. The negotiations signal Hanoi Police FC’s ambition to retain a key asset, mirroring The Cong Viettel’s strategic player investments.

Van Hau, a Thai Binh native, was a linchpin for Hanoi FC and Vietnam’s national team, contributing to the 2018 AFF Cup and 2019 SEA Games gold, before joining Hanoi Police FC in 2023. His robust defending, rapid overlaps, and three assists in 12 matches powered their 2023 V.League title, complementing stars like Nguyen Quang Hai, now a Hanoi Police FC mainstay. His dynamic style, akin to Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s Vu Van Thanh, made him a fan favorite at Hang Day’s 20,000-capacity stands.

A nagging ankle injury, requiring multiple surgeries in Singapore and South Korea since mid-2023, has sidelined Van Hau for nearly two years, missing Vietnam’s 2024 AFF Cup triumph. Despite this, his determination, evidenced by rigorous rehab sessions reported by VFF, keeps him on track for a December return. Hanoi Police FC’s faith in the 26-year-old, who trained briefly with Dutch club Heerenveen in 2019, underscores their long-term vision.

Securing Van Hau’s signature is more than a financial move; it’s a statement of Hanoi Police FC’s intent to dominate domestically and shine regionally, as seen in their 2024-2025 ASEAN Club Championship final run against Buriram United or BG Pathum United. A renewed contract would retain a top talent and boost morale, akin to Song Lam Nghe An’s youth retention, while signaling Hanoi Police FC’s professional investment, rivaling Nam Dinh FC’s Nguyen Xuan Son deal. Success could see Van Hau anchor their defense against Becamex Binh Duong in Round 21, fortifying their V.League title chase, currently third with 34 points.
