Vietnam Women’s team to face German club side

Hanoi, May 4, 2025 – Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and Werder Bremen announced on May 4 that Vietnam’s women’s national team will host the German Frauen-Bundesliga club in a friendly at Hang Day Stadium on May 16 at 7:00 PM. Marking 50 years of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Germany, the match aims to boost the team’s preparation for the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers while fostering cultural exchange through football, per VFF.

Vietnam, led by coach Mai Duc Chung, faces a formidable Werder Bremen, known for their modern, technical style and a mix of young talents and seasoned internationals from Europe’s top-tier league, akin to Hanoi Police FC’s V.League depth. The friendly offers a high-caliber test, building on Vietnam’s 2-0 loss to Germany in a 2023 pre-World Cup friendly, where Huynh Nhu Thanh Nha scored, per FIFA records. Thanh Nha, a Hanoi FC Youth product, is tipped to shine again before 12,000 expected fans, rivaling The Cong Viettel’s crowds.

List of players called up to assemble with the Vietnam Women’s National Team.

VFF General Secretary Nguyen Van Phu emphasized the match’s role in 2025’s packed schedule, including Asian Cup qualifiers and a Japan camp (June 8-18). “This is a key opportunity to face quality opposition, enhancing our players’ experience and resilience,” Phu said, echoing Song Lam Nghe An’s youth development ethos. Werder Bremen’s football director, Clemens Fritz, added, “Post our May 1 cup final, this trip is a career highlight for our players, and we anticipate a competitive clash.”

The 25-player squad, summoned by the Sports Authority, includes stars like Tran Thi Kim Thanh and Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy, supported by assistants Doan Minh Hai, fitness coach Cedric Sege Christian Roger, and ex-internationals Nguyen Thi Ngoc Anh and Dang Kieu Trinh. Training begins May 6 at Vietnam Youth Football Training Centre, with a friendly against Ho Chi Minh City FC on May 12 during their Hanoi camp. The 10-day preparation, mirroring Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s camps, targets tactical cohesion.

Post-friendly, Vietnam heads to Japan, then Viet Tri for Asian Cup qualifiers (June 29-July 5, Group E), aiming for a 2026 World Cup berth, per AFC rules. The Werder Bremen clash, a diplomatic and sporting milestone, positions Vietnam to challenge Asia’s elite, like Japan, with Thanh Nha’s flair, akin to Nam Dinh FC’s Nguyen Xuan Son, driving their continental ambitions, supported by Becamex Binh Duong-like fan fervor.
