Kuala Lumpur, 7 June, 2025 – Ahead of Vietnam’s crucial showdown with Malaysia in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, defender Nguyen Thanh Chung has acknowledged the uncertainty and challenge posed by Malaysia’s newly added naturalized players.
Just days before the match, the Malaysian national team made headlines by calling up four new players—all of whom boast impressive experience playing in Europe. This unexpected addition has made it difficult for Vietnam’s coaching staff to fully analyze their opponents.
Head coach Kim Sang Sik admitted that the sudden change created complications in preparing for the match. Speaking during the team’s training session on June 7, Thanh Chung echoed the sentiment, saying, “My teammates and I have watched some of their footage, but since they’ve added a lot of new faces, we haven’t faced these players before.”
“Malaysia has brought in many naturalized players, and at this point, we don’t even know who will be in their starting lineup. That’s why I give respect to every one of their players,” he added.
Thanh Chung also mentioned that the coaching staff has been making tactical and physical adjustments to help the squad adapt to the playing conditions in Malaysia. While he admitted he hasn’t reached peak physical condition yet, he pledged to give his absolute best if called upon. “If I get the chance to play, I’ll give 100% effort,” he stated.
Commenting on the new faces in Vietnam’s squad, such as Quang Vinh Pendant and Ly Duc, Thanh Chung expressed confidence in their integration. “They have played in the V-League, so they already understand the playing style. It hasn’t taken them long to blend in with the team.”
The high-stakes match between Vietnam and Malaysia is scheduled to kick off at 8:00 PM (Vietnam time) on June 10 at Bukit Jalil Stadium. It is expected to play a vital role in determining Vietnam’s path to the 2027 Asian Cup finals.
