Ho Chi Minh, 9 June, 2025 – The 2025 AFF U19 Women’s Championship officially kicked off on June 9 in Ho Chi Minh City, with host nation Vietnam U19 Women making an impressive statement in their opening match by defeating Myanmar 2-0. The match was widely regarded as the toughest in Group A, and the result gives Vietnam a major advantage in the race for the semifinals.
Both teams entered the match with high determination, knowing that a victory would not only boost their semifinal hopes but also offer a better chance to avoid facing defending champions Thailand early in the knockout rounds.
Myanmar started energetically, leveraging their superior fitness and launching fast-paced attacks to press Vietnam’s defense. Goalkeeper Le Thi Thu and the Vietnamese backline had to stay alert, particularly early in the match when Myanmar’s Sandar Lin nearly scored with a dangerous strike, only to be denied by a crucial save.

After the first 10 minutes of pressure, the Vietnamese side gradually regained control of the game. In the 35th minute, midfielder Thuy Linh broke the deadlock with a stunning free-kick, putting the hosts ahead. Just five minutes later, Thanh Hieu doubled the lead after capitalizing on another opportunity, sending the home crowd into celebration.
The second half saw Vietnam continue to dominate possession and maintain attacking pressure, but they were unable to add to their goal tally as Myanmar’s defense tightened. Despite that, the 2-0 scoreline stood until the final whistle, giving Vietnam a confident and important win to open their campaign.
In the other Group A match, Laos secured a 2-0 victory over Timor Leste, keeping pace with Vietnam in the standings.
Over in Group B, Thailand and Malaysia both recorded convincing wins. Thailand dismantled Indonesia 6-0, while Malaysia earned a 4-1 victory over Cambodia, confirming their strong form early in the tournament.
Vietnam will look to build on their momentum in the upcoming group stage matches, with hopes of reaching the semifinals and making a deep run on home soil in the 2025 edition of the regional tournament.
