Nguyen Duc Chien bids farewell to The Cong Viettel ahead of capital derby

Hanoi, 15 June, 2025 – In a surprising move, midfielder Nguyen Duc Chien has officially parted ways with The Cong Viettel just days before the highly anticipated capital derby against Hanoi FC in Round 25 of the 2024/25 V.League 1 season.

The announcement was made via the club’s official page, stating: “Thank you Duc Chien for your efforts and contributions during your time with us. We wish you success on your next journey.”

The timing of the departure raised eyebrows, as Viettel still have two crucial matches left in the season, against Hanoi FC and Ho Chi Minh City FC. The team, under coach Popov, is pushing hard for a top-three finish, currently sitting just one point behind Hanoi Police FC in third place.

Duc Chien’s absence will be a blow to Viettel’s ambitions. A key figure in both defense and midfield, the Hai Duong-born player has been an integral part of Viettel’s system. His departure leaves coach Popov with a selection challenge as he prepares for two decisive fixtures to close the season.

The 26-year-old was also recently called up by coach Kim Sang Sik for Vietnam’s national team in their recent away fixture against Malaysia in the final round of 2027 Asian Cup qualification.

Following his departure, sources suggest that Nguyen Duc Chien is set to join Phu Dong Ninh Binh, the newly crowned V.League 2 champions, where he could reunite with former teammate Nguyen Hoang Duc. Phu Dong Ninh Binh will make their V.League 1 debut next season and are actively building a competitive squad.

If confirmed, Duc Chien’s move to Ninh Binh will be a significant reinforcement for the newly promoted club, signaling their ambition to make a strong impression in the top flight.
