Vietnam women’s volleyball team defeats Philippines to stay unbeaten at VTV Cup 2025

Vinh Phuc, 29 June, 2025 – The Vietnam women’s volleyball team delivered another impressive performance to defeat the Philippines 3-0 in the second Group A match of the VTV Cup 2025, held on the evening of June 29 in Vinh Phuc.

Facing a revamped Philippines lineup featuring three Filipino-American players – Brooke Van Sickle, MJ Phillips, and Tia Andaya – the Vietnamese coaching staff took no chances and fielded their strongest starting lineup. Star players Tran Thi Thanh Thuy, Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen, Nguyen Thi Trinh, Nguyen Khanh Dang, Tran Thi Bich Thuy, Doan Thi Lam Oanh, and Nguyen Thi Uyen all started.

Vietnam began the match confidently, but the Philippines responded with determined play, eventually taking a 12-10 lead in the first set. The visitors maintained a two-point gap at 18-16, forcing coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet to adjust his tactics by bringing in setter Kim Thoa and opposite hitter Kieu Trinh to refresh the attack. Despite this, Vietnam only regained control in the final moments, rallying to win the first set 25-20.

The second set followed a similar pattern. Vietnam took an early lead, but the Philippines stayed close. Once again, Thanh Thuy and Bich Tuyen stepped up at crucial moments to help Vietnam clinch the set 25-21.

The third set was tightly contested, with both teams trading points throughout. However, the Vietnamese duo of Thanh Thuy and Bich Tuyen once again proved instrumental, delivering key points to secure a 25-21 win and seal the 3-0 sweep.

With two straight-set victories, Vietnam now sits comfortably atop Group A of the VTV Cup 2025.

In another match played earlier, the U21 Vietnam team suffered a 1-3 loss to U21 Thailand. Having lost both of their group matches, Dang Thi Hong and her teammates are now at the bottom of Group B. They will face defending champions Korabelka (Russia) in their final group match tomorrow.
