Nguyen Quoc Viet sets historic milestone as Vietnam clinch third consecutive ASEAN U23 championship

Hanoi, 30 July, 2025 – Vietnam U23’s 1-0 victory over Indonesia in the 2025 ASEAN U23 Championship final not only secured the team’s third straight title but also marked a historic personal achievement for striker Nguyen Quoc Viet.

The 22-year-old forward became the first player in history to be part of all three of Vietnam’s consecutive U23 ASEAN Championship triumphs, following earlier victories in 2022 and 2023. Quoc Viet began his journey at this tournament at the age of 19, quickly establishing himself as one of the brightest prospects in Vietnamese football and a key figure in the team’s regional dominance.

However, his role in this year’s campaign was less prominent. Quoc Viet failed to score, lost his starting position to Nguyen Cong Phuong – who shone brightly in the final – and was sidelined due to an injury sustained during the semifinal against the Philippines, forcing him to miss the title decider at the intense Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

As he has now aged out of the U23 category, Quoc Viet will no longer feature in future editions of the tournament. Nevertheless, his record of winning three consecutive titles is likely to stand as an unbreakable benchmark.

Alongside Quoc Viet, several other players such as Khuat Van Khang, Nguyen Van Truong, Tran Trung Kien, and Nguyen Phi Hoang celebrated their second U23 ASEAN Championship triumph, further underlining the depth and consistency of Vietnam’s young talent.

The three-peat not only highlights Vietnam’s rise as a powerhouse in Southeast Asian youth football but also cements Nguyen Quoc Viet’s legacy as a symbol of resilience, leadership, and ambition – living up to the “King of Youth Tournaments” moniker bestowed upon him by fans.
