Ninh Binh, 11 August, 2025 – FIFA has officially confirmed that Vietnamese-Bulgaria footballer Chung Nguyen Do, whose registered Vietnamese name is Tran Thanh Trung, is now eligible to represent Vietnam at all national team levels.
On the afternoon of August 11, FIFA announced that Tran Thanh Trung had successfully completed the process of switching his football nationality from Bulgaria to Vietnam. This was the final step required for him to be eligible for selection, as he had already obtained Vietnamese citizenship earlier.
With this approval, if called up by head coach Kim Sang Sik, Tran Thanh Trung can now officially wear the national colors for both the Vietnam senior team and the U23 side in upcoming 2025 tournaments. These include the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers, the 33rd SEA Games, and the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers.
The midfielder returned to Vietnam in early August to join Ninh Binh FC, where he has been registered for the 2025/2026 V.League season wearing the number 8 shirt. He has featured in several friendly matches for the club but is still in the process of adapting to Vietnam’s weather and playing conditions.
Tran Thanh Trung’s eligibility is seen as a significant boost for Vietnam’s national teams, adding depth and versatility in midfield ahead of a busy competition schedule.
