Back-to-back surprises in round 2 of the 2025/26 V.League 1

Vinh, 23 August, 2025 – Round 2 of the V.League 2025/26 delivered a series of dramatic twists that stunned both experts and fans, proving once again the unpredictable nature of Vietnam’s top flight. The biggest surprise came at Thien Truong Stadium, where reigning champions Nam Dinh fell to Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA).

Heading into the match, few believed SLNA could topple Nam Dinh, especially on their home turf. Nam Dinh had just beaten Hai Phong convincingly in the opening round and entered the new season with an impressive squad bolstered by high-profile summer signings. In contrast, SLNA suffered a disappointing defeat to newly promoted PVF-CAND in Round 1 and continued to rely heavily on their homegrown talents rather than expensive reinforcements. Yet, against all odds, the youthful side from Nghe An secured all three points, exposing vulnerabilities in the champions and reminding the league that no team is untouchable.

Another standout result was delivered by Ninh Binh, who produced a stunning performance to thrash Thanh Hoa. For a promoted side to defeat one of the most seasoned and tactically disciplined clubs in the league is already noteworthy, but doing so with a commanding scoreline turned heads across Vietnamese football. The victory not only propelled Ninh Binh to the top of the table after two rounds, but also sent a strong message about their ambitions. Backed by significant summer investments in quality players, the club appears determined to fight not just for survival but potentially for a place in the title race.

Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City Police FC (formerly Ho Chi Minh FC) suffered their first setback of the season after an encouraging Round 1 win over Hanoi FC. Traveling to Hang Day Stadium, fans expected another spirited showing from Le Huynh Duc’s men, particularly with star striker Nguyen Tien Linh leading the attack. Instead, The Cong Viettel completely dictated proceedings, controlling possession and limiting their opponents to very few clear chances. The 3-0 defeat was a sobering reminder that consistency and balance are still lacking in Ho Chi Minh City Police FC’s game. Improvements in both defense and creativity will be essential if they want to maintain momentum over the long season.

Round 2 of V.League 2025/26 has therefore reshaped early perceptions. Nam Dinh’s stumble proves the champions are vulnerable, while SLNA’s fearless youngsters and Ninh Binh’s explosive form provide fresh excitement at the top of the table. For Ho Chi Minh City Police FC, the challenge is to quickly bounce back and show that their opening-day triumph was not a one-off. With only two rounds played, the season is already delivering unexpected narratives that promise a thrilling journey ahead.
